Sleeping Beauty

[Trigger warning: rape, sexual violence and abuse]

I spent my day disusing how we challenge rape myths and the normalization of sexual violence. I really really really wish that the church was different. I really really really wish it understood. I really really really wish it let Jesus not patriarchy shape its culture. And I'm really really really grateful for the amazing work Rachel Held Evan's does challenging patriarchy and misogyny. Check out her post here: http://rachelheldevans.com/gospel-coalition-douglas-wilson-sex I am so deeply disturbed by what she reports has been written in the name of Christ. It makes me nauseous.

Rachel helpfully suggests action we can take in response to what will rightly make us angry. I just wanted to add one myself:

STOP TELLING YOUR CHILDREN THE STORY OF SLEEPING BEAUTY

Or if you do tell them tell it like it really is. Sleeping Beauty was a woman who was drugged and lay unconscious in her bed. A man she did not know, who had massive entitlement issues, climbed in her bedroom window and sexually assaulted her. I can't imagine she lived happily ever after.
